What does it mean to be a modern day Ruth?

What does it mean to be a modern day Ruth?

In the story of Ruth, the first picture we see is a desolate woman, suffering and grieving from the loss of her husband. She lost the love of her life. She lost any means of surviving. She lost everything. The first picture painted of this poor woman is not a pretty one.

She was forced to rely on God. Her heart of obedience and commitment set her up for a lifetime of love and blessings. She didn’t focus so much on her present situation as she did on the things to come.

Not only did God bless her, but through Ruth’s faithfulness, generations to come were blessed. Naomi was blessed. Boaz was blessed. Their descendants were even blessed.

I want to be a woman after God’s heart. That is my deepest desire. I want to serve God and be obedient. I want to be a modern day Ruth in a world that has forgotten this concept.

Sometimes being that woman is hard. It means doing things God’s way, instead of my own. We, as women of God, should bear fruits of wisdom, peace, love, and joy. Through our fruits others can be brought to Christ’s love.

Here are characteristics of a modern Day Ruth

She is Kind  “And on her tongue is the law of kindness.” Proverbs 31:26. A modern day Ruth chooses kindness, even when the favor is not returned. She chooses to have a gentle spirit, and to walk in grace daily because of the grace that has been shown to her. That’s all she needs to be a kind person.

She is Loving  “Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.” 1 Peter 4:8. A modern day Ruth is full of love for God and others. Everything she does, she does in love. She chooses to shake off bitterness or offenses, because God has called her to an example of His love in a world that needs it.

She fears the Lord “Charm is deceptive and beauty is fleeting, but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.” Proverbs 31:30. A modern day Ruth honors her Lord. Every decision she makes is out of reverence and respect for the One she loves. She understands that He is the One with the whole world in His hands, and she can rest in that understanding.

She walks in peace “You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You.” Isaiah 26:3. A modern day Ruth chooses peace over worry. When she finds herself torn apart by the world, she lays down to rest in His love for a while. She keeps her focus on Him, and in return He gives her His precious peace.

She delights in her Father “Delight yourself in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart.” Psalm 37:4 She is proud to call herself a daughter of God. She knows that nothing else in this world can fill her soul to the brim. She trusts in the Lord to plant in her heart the desires He has for her. He blesses her in favor because she has chosen to follow Him.

She Defends those who can’t defend themselves “Open your mouth for the mute, for the rights of all the unfortunate. Open your mouth, judge righteously, and defend the rights of the afflicted and needy.” Proverbs 31:8-9. A modern day Ruth chooses others over herself. She chooses to rid herself of selfishness, and to depend the cause of the broken and needy. She allows God to transform her mind in order for her to love on others, just as she has been shown divine love.

She isn’t a gossip “In the same way, women are to be worthy of respect, not malicious talkers but temperate and trustworthy in everything.” 1 Timothy 3:11. A modern Day Ruth takes her problems to the Lord. She chooses to bite her tongue, and only speak when it is to edify and build up someone else. When someone confides in her, she intercedes for them in private prayer. She chooses to be a woman of respect.

What she does is for God’s glory, not her own “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.” Colossians 3:23. She is confident in herself, and doesn’t feel obligated to show everyone else that she is special. She knows in her heart she is treasured by the King of Kings. She loves her Lord deeply, and chooses to do everything for His glory and not her own.

Seeks out her husband’s best interest “She brings him (her husband) good, not harm all the days of her life.” Proverbs 31:12 A modern day Ruth cherishes the heart of her husband, even if she hasn’t met him yet. She honors him, encourages him, and treasures him. She chooses to build him up instead of tear him down. She pushes him to be all that God has called him to be.

She has a pure heart Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.” Matthew 5:8. She can lay her head down in peace at night because her heart is pure. Whatever she does is to build up others, and not to tear them down. She prays daily that God would purify her heart and mind, so that she can walk in the will of her Father.

She walks in faith “Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord would fulfill His promise to her!” Luke 1:45. Just like the Ruth of the Bible, a modern day Ruth holds onto the promises that were given to her by God. Even when her hopes and dreams seem unlikely, she places them in the hands of God and trusts that when He sees fit, He will give her everything she needs.

She understands her worth in Christ “I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well.” Psalms 139:14 A modern day Ruth embraces her beauty, in a culture that tells her she shouldn’t. She has mastered the art of loving herself, because of the One who loved her first. She chooses to see herself and others through the eyes of God.

Her inner beauty shines “Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes. Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight.” 1 Peter 3:3-4. She understands that the package reflects what is on the inside. She understands the most important thing is to have a beautiful heart. Her heart shines from the inside out.

She isn’t jealous of other women “A tranquil heart gives life to the flesh, but envy makes the bones rot.” Proverbs 14:30. A modern day Ruth has become confident in the woman that she is, and chooses to celebrate other women instead of tear them down. She understands the damage jealousy does to the heart. So when she feels even the slightest pang of it, she gives it to the Lord to renew her mind once again.

She is devoted “But Ruth said, “Do not urge me to leave you or to return from following you. For where you go I will go, and where you lodge I will lodge. Your people shall be my people, and your God my God.” Ruth 1:16-17 No matter what happens in life, she has devoted her heart to God. She has trusted her future in His hands, and has made the decision to follow Him to the ends of the earth. Her devotion is an example for all women.

She is wise “She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue.” Proverbs 31:26 A modern day Ruth chooses to not speak out of ignorance. Instead, she chooses to embrace wisdom, and to only speak of that which she knows. She has come to the understanding that she doesn’t know everything and that’s okay.

She is trustworthy “The heart of her husband safely trusts her; So he will have no lack of gain.” Proverbs 31:11 A modern day Ruth has been entrusted with an assignment by God. She is trustworthy, and embraces the heart of her husband. She understands that marriage is a calling, and she chooses to support and love her husband. He knows he can place his trust in her.

She is smart with money “She considers a field and buys it; from her profits she plants a vineyard.” Proverbs 31:16 A modern day Ruth doesn’t act without thinking. Instead, she carefully reflects on how her decisions will affect her future and family. She invests and saves. She makes wise financial choices in order to better her future.

She is strong “She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come.” Proverbs 31:25 Though she has faced heartbreak and disappointment, she knows that her Savior is in control. Because of that she can laugh at the days to come, instead of living in fear. She is the epitome of strength, because she has allowed her disappointments to make her better, not bitter.

She has joy“Happy are the people whose God is the Lord” Psalm 144:15. A modern day Ruth trusts in the love of her Jesus. She walks in victory each day because she knows the devil has already been defeated. She has joy, and knows that God will work all things together for her good. She can face the future because she has God on her side.

When you find the Right Man God has for you:

When you find the Right Man God has for you:

Ladies, there isn’t a fairy tale out there that can compare to the one God has for you. Right now if you are in a season of waiting, cherish it. Hold onto the time you have with just you and God, the perfect romance. Many people see waiting as wasting, but God sees waiting as preparation.

Be encouraged in the fact that God is preparing you for the person you will marry someday. He is also preparing that person for you. And when the time comes He will bring you both together to love and cherish each other, and to serve Him.

The thing about God is He knows exactly what we need. He doesn’t just give us our basic needs, but He longs to give us the desires of our hearts. Our job is to take delight in Him and place our lives in His precious hands.

When you find the right man he won’t be like other men of this world. The person God has for you is special, unique, and someone to be cherished. There will be no denying when God brings that man into your life.

You will know he is the one because of the deep, spiritual connection that draws you to him. It will be like nothing else you’ve ever experienced. You may not feel this connection right away, but when God opens your eyes you will see the man He has for you in a whole different way.

God is taking care of you. Your job is to serve and wait. Fall in love with God. Glean the field just as Ruth did. Work while you wait. When you become more focused on your Creator, the process will become much easier.

The man He has for you is going to love you and cherish your heart. That is what you deserve, and God isn’t going to give you anything less than what you deserve. You are His child. He has great things in store for your future. The best things take time. But the process is going to be worth the wait when that time comes.

Even when trials come your way, through the fights, God is the glue that will hold you both together. So when you find the right man, remember to always keep God at the center of your heart and marriage. Keeping God in his rightful place is the key to a long, happy, and lasting marriage. Pray together, serve together, and fall in love with each other every single day.

I want you to know today that God has got you. Your heart is precious to Him, He isn’t going to give it to just anyone. A time will come when He places your heart in the hands of a worthy man, someone who will love and cherish you for all that you are.

Until then, stand firm in the promise God has given you. You do not walk alone, and soon your paths will intertwine. And when that day comes, you will look back and thank God for His faithfulness to you as you begin a new chapter in your life.

God always gives his best to those who leave the choice to him.

Preparing to become a wife: Tips for Single Women:

Preparing to become a wife: Tips for Single Women:

Many of us dream of that special day. Our wedding day, when all of the attention is on us in that stunning white dress. The flowers, the decorations, the fancy cars and let’s not forget, the Prince Charming. But most of us have no idea what age we will be when Mr. Right asks to spend the rest of his life with us.

Many of us have focused (let’s be honest) so much time and thought on the wedding and the marriage that we have never spent enough time and energy on the most important part”…preparing to become a wife! But how do we do that as single women today:

Develop an intimate relationship with God. You cannot enter into a successful covenant with a husband if you don’t first have one with God. Seek biblical wisdom, study the word, develop a life of prayer and be dedicated to living for God. This will strengthen the marriage covenant when God allows you to walk into that season. A three-cord strand is not easily broken (Ecclesiastes 4:12)

Master the art of fidelity and trust. No man wants a woman that cannot be faithful or one that turns her neck at every fine man that she sees. Learn to be 100% committed prior to a serious courtship. Be happy with what God has blessed you with and cultivate your relationship. It is also important to be a woman of your word. If you promise to do something, be sure to do it!

Develop the ability to take care of a home. Ladies, in order to be a great partner in marriage, we must bring the ability to emotionally and physically take care of the house. Learn to set an atmosphere of peace and love. Avoid quarrels when possible. Practice gentleness with others that cross your path.

Learn how to cook! We know that men like to eat. Let’s be serious here. We all need to eat to live. Eating out all of the time can become expensive and who doesn’t love a home-cooked meal from time to time. If you cannot do anything beyond boil water, invest in a cookbook. Try one new meal a week and you will quickly improve your cooking skills.

Make smart financial decisions. If you desire to marry a man that provides and makes the best decisions for his family, you need to do the same. Smart men don’t want to marry a woman that spends way more than she saves. Work on your budget and be sure to have an emergency fund that covers 3-6 months on expenses along with retirement savings. Preparing for tomorrow is important. The ability to manage money is important in marriage.

Be complete as one. Be comfortable with not having a man in this season. Learn to be happy on your own. Find joy in those things that make you happy. Love what you have and don’t yearn for what others have. Spend time in your singleness doing the things that you love to do. Travel, find hobbies and do the things that married women tell you that you won’t have time to do when you get married and then become a mother.

Learn the art of compromise. Marriage will be about give and take. While you are single, learn that you don’t always have to be right and accept that most things will not always happen your way. Be willing to sacrifice what you want for the benefit and happiness of others. Wives have to compromise many things. The earlier we learn to compromise, the better off we will be in marriage.

Be committed to pursuing your dreams and supporting others. It is important to have your own goals and motivations prior to becoming one with your future husbands. The single season is a great opportunity to begin building your career, business or working towards other goals. Learn how to support family and friends in their endeavors as well. When you become a wife, you will have to support your husband’s dreams, possibly at the expense of yours. You must be okay with this level of sacrifice and compromise prior to committing to marriage.

Know what submission is and be ready to walk in it. Many people shy away from this discussion. Submission is not equivalent to obedience. Submission is yielding in love. Study God’s design for marriage and understand the role of a wife. In your singleness, God is your husband. Submit yourself to Him. Trust His plan and timing for your life. Seek His guidance in all that you do. Practicing submission now will be the driving force to it being second nature to you once you become a wife.

Be holy and feminine in your conduct. Always carry yourself as a classy woman who walks with confidence. Men want a woman they are proud to take home to their families. They want a woman with high self-esteem, one who walks gracefully, respects herself and others around her.

Marriage is a sacred bond between God, man and woman. This is a great starting list.

Good Luck and God is crazy about you.

7 Types of friends every woman should have

“The righteous choose their friends carefully, but the way of the wicked leads them astray” Proverbs 12:26

One of the things I do know is how to choose the right friends, girl friends, and over the years, have been blessed with some amazing friends in my life. Yes, as the seasons of life change, some have come and gone; some by choice and some by force. But one thing is for certain: we all need a good girlfriend (or two) in our lives.

There are just some conversations and places that are meant for girlfriends and not necessarily for our significant others. I know that if I have a crisis I will have to reach out to a girlfriend.

So even if we don’t hang out as much as I’d like, I love them, and there is nothing like their friendship.

Here are 7 types of friends I think every woman should have:

The Supporter: She’s the one, who no matter what you’re doing, you know you can call her and she will be excited for you. She’s your source of encouragement. Whether it’s starting a new business or writing a book… Whatever it is, she is going to cheer you on like no one else will. But she genuinely loves and supports everything that you do.

The Counselor: This is the one that gives the best advice. She’s been there and done just about everything. For some reason you are comfortable discussing your most private thoughts with her that you wouldn’t dare share with anyone else.  She’s the level headed one who you can vent to about anything and she will not judge you. You feel so much better after your conversations with her.
Me & Nasta

The Blunt One: This is the one that will tell you like it is, even when you don’t want to hear the truth. But she’ll tell you in a loving, sisterly kinda way ( and sometimes, she’ll just give it to you with no filter because the situation calls for it). This is the one that when everyone else is walking on eggshells around you (to avoid hurting your feelings), she’ll tell you exactly how she feels, take it or leave it.

The Spiritual One: This is the one you can count on any time of day for a good word or prayer on your behalf. She’s the one that can feed the word to you and give you a bible verse to read that will help you in any situation. She’s your spiritual sister that keeps you on your toes, and empowers you to be still and listen.

Liz and Doryn:
(Thats Roger in the background)

The Motivator: This is the one that motivates you to reach newer heights. She’s the one you see handling her business like a boss, and you are steady taking notes of her every move. She compels you to dig deeper and go after what you really want in life. She’s the one that inspires you to dust off your vision board and get back on track.

The Funny One: This is the one that can make you laugh under any circumstance and about any situation. You know that when you are in need of a good laugh, you already have this friend on speed dial ready to go. She’s the one that everyone loves to be around and the life of any party because of her sense of humor. It’s hard for anyone to hate her.

Ann and Doryn

The Sensible One: This is the one you call when you want to do something you know you shouldn’t be doing. She’ll listen to your problems and talk you off the ledge. She’ll give you a different, more calm point of view for just about every situation (especially if it means keeping you out of trouble).

Guard your Heart in that Relationship:

Guard your Heart in that Relationship:
Proverbs 4:23, “Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life.” Now, guarding your heart is not about being recklessly available; it is about being thoughtfully vulnerable. You can’t just put up walls around your heart. You have to be open to the world. You have to be vulnerable in order to love. If you are not vulnerable, you can’t love anything completely and fully. In order to do that, it simply means we have got to communicate openly, understanding that the possibility of being hurt is there. Getting hurt or disappointed when your relationship fails is part of life! And you cannot always prevent “hurt” we cannot always prevent the fact that we will have feelings for someone.

But we can control how we act on those feelings and in that way, we can guard our hearts, because guarding your heart means to protect yourselves from "regrets"!  And you can easily avoid "regrets" by the self-control you practice now ... emotionally and obviously physically as well.  Don't give parts of your heart or physical signs of affection away in a relationship that you are not yet certain of.

In Philippians 4:6-7, Paul says, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Paul tells us that prayer is the pathway to guarding our hearts and minds with the peace of God. Peace comes as a comfort rooted in our trust in God that is expressed in the process of prayer. So, guarding your heart is the result of clear communication. The key to guarding your heart is to talk to God about the relationship before you talk to the other person about the relationship.

Guarding your heart doesn’t merely involve protecting yourself from too much intimacy with someone of the opposite sex. It is so much more than this! It’s a call to protect your character in all that you do. Unless you catch this kind of vision for why you need to guard your heart, it will remain a legalistic endeavor in your life.

We have all had our share of failed relationships and not all of these failed relationships were mistakes. Some were simply the result of mismatched souls. However painful some could have been there was no one to blame, some were the clear result of foolishness. The only way we can avoid this ever happening again is when we learn to guard our hearts.

When do hearts become unguarded?
Hearts become unguarded when you move too fast in the relationship–becoming too vulnerable too quickly. You must lay a foundation of friendship before building a house of intimacy.

Hearts become unguarded when you are not seeking God’s desires for the relationship. Instead of depending on your own understanding and priorities for the relationship, you must seek God’s heart.

Hearts become unguarded when there is poor communication about the relationship. This can include poor communication with God in prayer or poor communication with the other person in discussion. If you are too afraid to talk to either of them about an aspect of your relationship, then you probably shouldn’t be involved in it.

Good luck my peeps!

Overcoming Addiction:

 Overcoming Addiction:

So many people today are struggling with different kinds of addictions; addiction to sex, drugs, alcohol, smoking, masturbation, porn, etc. You name it. If you're struggling to overcome an addiction, the good news is you can do it with God's help.

Believing God's Word more than you believe what you think or feel. As a believer in Christ, you are "a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new" (2 Corinthians 5:17). And you "have strength for all things in Christ who empowers" you; you are "ready for anything and equal to anything through Him who infuses inner strength into you” (Philippians: 4:13).

Addictions will hold you captive for the rest of your life until you do three or four things:

You’ve got to own it: admit that you have a problem and that it is a sin. James 5:16 instructs us to "confess your faults to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man accomplishes much." I remember beginning of this year I went for FNL Basketball at YMCA and I ended up drinking, did I mention I am a recovering addict, well I am. Telling my boyfriend about it, he was so disappointed in me and the look on his face screamed, “Winnie, how could you? I am so disappointed in you” But I couldn’t keep it a secret, I confessed my fault to him, I also accepted it was a problem and we prayed about it together, God listened, since then, I have even never thought of going back to the bottle.

Make a quality decision: that you will do whatever is necessary to be free from this ungodly behavior. There is a plan to freedom in James 4:7: "Therefore submit yourselves to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you." Most of these things require discipline, making a decision and sticking to it. Out of experience, it will not be easy, but you have to stick to your decision. Even when I had stopped the alcohol, quitting smoking wasn’t easy, but I did quit because I just decided to. But through it all, I learned that anytime we're willing to do what's right and we depend on God, His grace is activated in our lives to do it.

Cut off the supply line.  You know, certain things are creating this addiction, this pattern in your life.  You have to cut off the supply lines and, as you get it open, get some positive, good reinforcement in your life.

Read your Bible: Everything is permissible for me -- but not everything is beneficial. Everything is permissible for me -- but I will not be mastered by anything" (I Corinthians 6:12). Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit (Ephesians 5:18). It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery. You, my brothers, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the sinful nature, rather, serve one another in love (Galatians 5:1, 13).

Remember, there's nothing more valuable to you than your personal relationship with God and the time you spend with Him. Put Him first and you'll find that the power of God's Word will always prevail over the messes in your life. You don't have to settle for a life in bondage to any addiction, because in Christ, you can do it!
